So far a smidge less satisfying than pt1, but I am hopeful — Finished! As I thought, it was a fun ride, a little less fun than the first, even though it might very well be the superior book. But super fun, this and the first stand head and shoulders above the genre in terms of prose, character work and originality. You have no idea where it’s going and you’re thrilled to find out. In the end, it’s going to work out, no need to worry too much—but no happy end either. Bennett doesn’t do happy ends, he does a sort of melancholy, moody acceptance of the fact that the world will always be a little bit horrific and terrible, no matter what we do.
