God help me, with this. It’s so good. I can tell it will break my heart. Finished! Well, it did break my heart. In terms of critique, it won the Booker prize in ‘71, so it’s obviously good. With that said, it’s a lot. Anyone who moved anywhere, even under far more comfortable circumstances, would find this book enthralling and choking. It has you by the throat in every way except the physical. It’s a lot. I read a lot for school, so I compensate by typically reading very light, cosy books in my free time. Every now and again, I pick up something like this and remember how intense it can be. How confrontational. The author was unflinchingly direct, the narrative had not a drop of romanticism. It was all truth, naked and unvarnished, brutal at times. It was a lot.
