Strong year for Dramione fics being turned and published into actual books. Although, if all of them are this bad, then is it really? This isn't a fic rewrite, but it is inspired, I believe, by her (very famous) AO3 fanfic, "Draco Malfoy and the Horrifying Ordeal of Being in Love." She builds a new world, interwoven with folklore, magic, and science. She also gives our characters new names and backgrounds—Fairhrim and Mordaunt. But both the world-building and the characters fall flat and are very two-dimensional. To keep it short - this book is flatter than a piece of paper. I feel like she writes this book as though she's writing a fanfic, where the world and the things happening are exclusively there to put the two characters together, and their banter and chemistry is the only thing that matters. It's just that in fanfic, readers can (and do) heavily rely on the original work to fill in the gaps and to offer a very rich world-building and characterization that already exists in canon, so that type of "I'm just giving you a frame for these two characters" writing works. Here? Not at all. We don't have any framework to work with, and what she gives us is very, very little. Just so uninteresting and - I've said it three times already - flat. Also, another thing is her writing! She goes for this witty, humorous writing, but she just takes it too far. Every. SINGLE. Sentence is some kind of a joke or pun (I'm not even exaggerating), to the point where NONE OF IT is funny. I think she was going for something like Douglas Adams. She failed. The thing is, she *can* write well - which we know primarily from her original Dramione fanfic, as well as certain chapters in this book. When she writes the serious parts, the parts where they realize they are starting to fall for each other, she writes beautifully. But then she just goes back to this forced """"funny"""" writing, and it's horrible. This is the first book of two. I can't believe I've actually spent money on this.
