I needed a good cry and this one definitely delivered. It covers a lot of themes that I never really read about; fiction or non fiction - primarily the struggles of black girls growing up in a system that never seems to work in their favour. A touching story about frienship intertwined with difficult themes of trauma, abuse and mental health. I actually really love the relatable way friendship is portrayed here - a soul connection that reminded me of my teenage years when I started making deeper bonds with people I’m still close with today. Although it’s a YA novel with an easy to read writing style (albeit confusing with jumping around the timeline, but it does make sense in the end), for me it felt like an important read because it showed a devastating reality of so many children (especially girls) in families and communities that do not provide them with the right attention and care. Made me angry, made me cry but most importantly made me more aware.
