I once read someone describe this book as uncensored Charles Dickens on steroids, and that really hits the nail on the head. I never thought I’d want an 900 page novel to go on forever, but I was devastated when I finished this book for the simple reason that there was nothing more to read. Crimson Petal dives deep into the perverse, twisted, and (in one instance) literally diseased minds of characters living in the shadows of 1870s London. I’ve never read a book with such vividly created characters, and Michel Faber’s writing is stunningly descriptive and vivid in stirring your imagination. This epic saga about the life of a young prostitute remains my favourite novel of all time.
