Book 7 is quite a big departure from the, now we'll established, structure of the previous books. The small party dungeon crawling is replaced by multi faction war, preparing defenses, abusing exploits on battlefields, adhering to complicated rules of engagement, commanding and managing various batallions via chat etc etc. It's very different to previous entries, in fact Carl and Princess Donut spend most of the book completely apart communicating only through chat, it's quite bold and I suspect it rubs some people the wrong way. In my opinion it's mostly well executed. The fights are sometimes a bit too big and too conveluted to follow along but the biggest strengths of this series are stil present and as strong as ever. There are tonnes of new characters introduced very rapidly to an already huge roster, and some of them are bland or quickly sidelined, but most of them are complex or funny enough to stay interesting. Althewhile series regulars see great character development. The plot armor continues to be a problem ||no major character deaths? Really? It's called "This Inevitable Ruin", come on! || The overarching story gets more and more interesting, the author keeps setting up a story of huge scope and I'm incredibly excited, but also worried, to see it wrapped up. This book continues building on that but the conclusion will make or break it. Chapter 35 deserves a special mention as it's really incredible, it comes out of nowhere and it really effectively captures a feeling of despair that these crawlers feel, I re listened to it a couple of times as soon as it finished, despite it being placed in the middle of a pretty important fight. Another good entry into the series, excited for book eight, especially since I'm caught up now 😊
