Finished: Thomas is in a section for respiratory diseases, trying to reach his friend Paul, who is on the other side of the hospital, in a section for psychiatric patients. Through this situation, and a series of other situations, Bernhard is remembering his friendship with Paul, an eccentric and an outcast of the Wittgenstein family. In his typical fashion, he dissects Austrian high society, the state of culture in Vienna, idiotic politicians, incompetent doctors, humiliating award ceremonies and sooo much more in a relatively short book. The fact that so many Austrians found him offensive makes it all just more believable. Bernhard is sharp, funny and brutally honest. He doesn't spare anyone, not even himself, like when he turns the knife on himself in what I found to be one of the rarest, most uncomfortable confessions about friendship in illness and old age. - Started: At least twice a month my mum asks me “HAVE YOU READ WITTGENSTEIN’S NEPHEW??” so now I’m finally doing it (reading it in Croatian)
