A newly-developed microchip designed by Zorin Industries for the British Government that can survive the electromagnetic radiation caused by a nuclear explosion has landed in the hands of the KGB. James Bond must find out how and why. His suspicions soon lead him to big industry leader Max Zorin who forms a plan to destroy his only competition in Silicon Valley by triggering a massive earthquake in the San Francisco Bay.
The precredit action sequence is actually really cool. I like the ski stunts, but it’s ruined by the idiotic contrapuntal surf song they use. It goes from being suspenseful action to being slapstick. The title sequences and title song Is one of the best from the Moore-era. It’s like 80s distilled. The great Private Detective Achille Aubergine is killed by a butterfly on a fishing rod… A lair in Zeppelin. That’s cool. Christopher Walken is in a whole different movie. I like the scene with The Russian agent Ivanova. Would have been even better if it had been Amasova from The Spy Who Loved Me. Great stunts: The ski chase in the start. The base jump from The Eiffel Tower. Taxa Chase in Paris. This movie is the worst of the Bonds. Roger Moore is too old. Zorin is like a cartoon villain. The script is all over the place, and Tanya Roberts is unbelievable as scientist.
