Paul Baumer and his friends Albert and Muller, egged on by romantic dreams of heroism, voluntarily enlist in the German army. Exceptional anti-war war movie. I was gripped from beginning to end, and what seemed to be the climax turned out to be only halfway through, I couldn't believe it. The dichotomy between the trenches and the military leadership, the development of the willing recruits being fed into the slaughterhouse, it all leads you to despair for humankind. A couple of things felt just a little too on-the-nose, but with the quality of the production and outstanding cinematography, it keeps you reveling in the journey. I wish the characters were just a little more developed — they were given time, but with a large cast it's hard to do them all justice despite the runtime. ||the tanks and flamethrower scene will stay with me for a while||
