Better Man

Lmao it's actually great. A musical biopic, I would probably never actively seek out such a movie, especially for a musician I barely know anything about. The gimmick had me intrigued I gotta say and I think it's brilliant. For those who are unaware - it's a Robbie Williams biopic but instead of being played by a human actor he's played by a digital monkey. Everyone else in the movie perceives him as Robbie Williams but to the audience he's a CG monkey. Allegedly the reason is that that's how Robbie perceives himself, a monkey performing for an audience, but this is never stated in the movie, you can kind of get it if you read between the lines but I think it would go over most of the intended audience's head. The real reason I think is that Robbie didn't want anyone else playing him, and since he probably can't act and the digital de aging would look horrible, they decided to go with a digital monkey. And this decision works incredibly in the movie's favour. I forgot I was watching a monkey within 5 minutes, which is a lot sooner than I would forget I was watching Timothy Chalamet in the Bob Dylan biopic. When I look at that poster I see Timothy Chalamet, when I look at this poster I see Robbie Williams as a monkey, which immersed me more. Does that make sense? I'm not a musical guy so maybe I have no standards but the musical sequences were fantastic, especially Rock DJ and Let Me Entertain You, but in completely different ways. I also really like that he's portrayed as a fame hungry destructive cunt, especially considering he's alive and voices the CG monkey, it felt pretty earnest (not saying it was, I don't know enough about his life but it did FEEL earnest). I did wish that the inevitable redemption arc was a bit more fleshed out though. Overall a great time, should I listen to some of his music?
