In this adaptation of the satirical British novel, Flora Poste, a plucky London society girl orphaned at age 19, finds a new home with some rough relatives, the Starkadders of Cold Comfort Farm. With a take-charge attitude and some encouragement from her mischievous friend, Mary, Flora changes the Starkadders' lives forever when she settles into their rustic estate, bringing the backward clan up to date and finding inspiration for her novel in the process.

Cold Comfort Farm is like an Austen-Bronte fever dream, based on a book that parodies rural-tragic-romantic genre popular in England in 1930s, but even without that context it’s so witty and funny I kinda want to read the book now, especially since I found out that it has some science fiction elements, too, like mobile phones existing, and Mayfair being an unattractive place to live in.
This movie is suuuch an oddball story brimming with the most eccentric characters I’ve ever seen in a British period drama. Also want to take a moment to mention the absolutely unreal cast??? Kate Beckinsale, Eileen Atkins, Ian McKellen, Miriam Margolyes, Joanna Lumley, Stephen Fry, and Rufus Sewell??? Young Flora Poste arrives at the farm of her extended family after the death of her parents, where she enriches their lives and helps them be free from their dreary existence on the ‘cursed’ farm. Really recommended if you’re in the mood for something light and fun.
