I appreciate this film for influencing one of my favourite movies of all time, Arrival. It starts if pretty strong, but one the candidate selection process begins I feel like the film drags and not much happens until the ending. The love interest subplot has a serious lack of chemistry, the ||existence of a second machine|| removes all the weight of the ||first one being destroyed, and I really wish the main character became the main candidate through her own agency and not thanks to religious extremists.|| The ending itself is mostly just fine imo, I understand what it was going for and I do not care that ||we don't get to see the aliens||, but I did find the dialogue a bit too generic and uninspired.
