All that sand went places. Amazing cinematography.
After watching the David Lynch version, with its sense of magical futurism and mysticism, depicting a distant future that felt at times very alien, I was taken aback by how frequently I would revisit it in my mind. For all it’s goofiness, the movie had character, and a uniqueness that makes it stay with you. Dennis Villeneuve certainly creates a spectacle, and as a sci-fi enthusiast I enjoyed the scale, the vastness of what a future so distant might accomplish. The clean shots and the way the technology works is convincing world-building. The pacing is good and keeps you engaged through a relatively coherent and quite long narrative. That covers all the positive I aspects i can think of. Unfortunately, this is not a movie with charm. It’s not very creative. The sets are all very grand, but nothing that isn’t shown in a multitude of other similar science fiction movies. I think ultimately the biggest critique goes to the editing.
