God bless this terrible, stupid movie. Bless it and its illiterate writers and whatever stable of creatively bankrupt middle managers made the bulk of the choices. They did such a terrible job, oh my god. It’s one of the worst moves I’ve ever seen, and the contrast between the acting talent, the money invested and the actual product is spellbinding. They gave Denzel Washington the role of a slaver. They made Pedro Pascal play a serious, hard man general. They made Paul Mescal play a dark, troubled, violent protagonist. Why?? Why did you do this? Did you never see any production these men were a part of? Do you cast based on what your mood ring tells you? You are excited, says your mood ring, wo you must cast whomever you are looking at at this time, because clearly your subconscious knows something you don’t. And by god, they did their best. Mescal especially managed to play a violent, bloodthirsty maniac, driven all the way insane with rage and hate, and hadn’t once laughed out loud at some of the lines he was given, or did so rarely enough that they could splice this movie together. Pedro Pascal was given nothing, so he did nothing, just stood there like an asshole, trying to look aristocratic and troubled. The less said about the two possibly incestuous emperors the better. One of them might be dying from Syphillis. It’s all very tasteful. My favorite moment was when Denze Washington, old man Denzel Washington with his skinny, gangly, old man arms, decided to /fight/ Paul Mescals character (the ridiculously jacked titular Gladiator who earlier killed giant mutated baboons with his teeth and bare hands) and the movie contrived to give Denzel the upper hand. I laughed out loud, cackled like a maniac in the middle of the theatre and nobody even cared because the other movie goers were as appalled as I was, if less entertained. Look, this is naive kitsch. It’s not ironic or satirical, this is not done by some snooty hipster who is trying his best to tel you how he has such good taste by making a tasteless movie to be funny or cool. No, the people who made this thought it was good. They thought it was great. And I can’t not love that.
my Roman Empire was the scene with Paul mescal under cotton candy skies
meh. hire writers
Paul Mescal innocent, Ridley Scott guilty on all counts.
