Saulnier creates beautiful shoots that permeate and linger throughout the entire film. The way he uses lighting, color-saturation and sound, he creates a wild atmospheric film where mood and emotion are more important than the narrative. The story is uncompromising and forces yourself to figure out what happens. The motives are not clear from the start and they stay that way throughout the movie. Some would say its messy and badly told. But what he does is to create moments that are raw and unsettling, and are up to interpretation. The violence is merciless, bloody and brutal.
