A live action remake that is 90% CGI of a 100% CGI film, we live in truly extraordinary times. They went for shot-for-shot accuracy, it's almost identical including the whole cast, except the actor cast for Astrid, that they completely changed for some reason. As someone who really liked the original, what falls incredibly flat in this remake is the voice of the actors. Of course, they can't compete with the really talented voice actors of the animated version, and especially the voices of Jay Baruchel as Hiccup and Craig Ferguson as Gobber are sorely missed. It's jarring, especially as it begins, for anyone who is familiar with Baruchel it just sounds like a cheap imitation. However as it went on that dissipated and it was fine. I wanted to dislike this more, but it was still John Powell's soundtrack and still the charming screenplay as a saving grace. And I thought to myself, honestly, if they made an animated remake of Lord of the Rings I also wouldn't complain. It's kind of an alternative version of more of the same, you know? And Gerard Butler doing both the voice of the animated version and playing himself as the village chieftain in the live action is pretty fucking boss.
