Second time I’ve seen this film, the first was in the cinema. That time I was spellbound by the atmosphere, the beauty of it, and more than anything the way it somehow felt both a hundred per cent authentically Japanese and in a real sense, reminded me of Berlin. This time, I cried like a baby. It’s not a sad film, it’s not even that vulnerable. The protagonist is inaccessible in many ways, but the subtle performance snuck between my ribs and struck without me even noticing. Wow. Just wow.
