When talented young writer Elizabeth Wurtzel earns a scholarship to Harvard, she sees it as her chance to escape the pressures of her working-class background and concentrate on her true talent. But what starts out so promising leads to self-destructive behavior and paralyzing depression that reflects an entire generation's struggle to navigate the effects of divorce, drugs, sex, and high expectations.

A moving and well-acted depiction of depression. I think this movie was misunderstood by its contemporary critics, which maybe made it the victim of the very stigma it was trying to depict. However, I agree that it felt a bit simplified and lacked some depth. Maybe a book that’s mostly internalized dialogue is too hard to translate into film. Worth a look if you’re open to explorations of mental health in cinema, but take it with a grain of salt.
