First of all—I’ve not seen the play but I’ve read it. And it’s brilliant, fantastic, hilarious, touching, everything you’d want. Tom Stoppard was/is a generational talent, up there with any great playwright we can think of. Second, this is fanfiction. I’m sorry, it’s fanfic of Hamlet, and it’s not even like, fanfic in the way of Dante. It’s just straight up fanfic. Which, I mean—if ever there was a target audience for Shakespearean fanfic, it’s me. Third, I can’t quite divorce the movie from the play, so it’s hard to judge how successful it is. I love it, obviously, but I can see how the goal here was more or less to film the play, rather than to make a movie. That said—I would watch Gary Oldman and/or Tim Roth do their taxes, breathless, at the edge of my seat. So— Idk, I think it’s brilliant. And the play is just coconuts.
