Nothing of substance here,I guess it looked cool
A difficult movie to rate for me. Something just feels off and it seriously ruined my enjoyment of it. The individual parts are really good, especially everything up until the third act, but the final product is less than the sum of its parts. The overall design of the world is incredible, a seriously original and compelling aesthetic without which the movie would be a lot worse. It's no surprise that it was designed by the same person who did Loki, which also looked incredible, especially for a TV show. The score by the Lost guy was also a standout, phenomenal score which coupled with the aesthetic creates a fantastic audiovisual package that's so refreshing for a Marvel movie. Hopefully they can continue to lean into this more in future movies. I seriously did not like Pascal's take on Reed Richards, he's the only actor of the main cast that really fumbled their role imo. Everyone else is great, Kirby as Sue Storm nails some of the more emotional beats in what's almost a lead role, and Quinn as Johnny Storm is not a comic relief himbo, instead he's capable and intelligent. Ben is mostly side lined but he's loveable and cute. So what's wrong? Why didn't I enjoy it? I have this feeling that the movie was butchered on the cutting room floor. There's many scenes where I felt there was entire chunks missing, and it was very obvious. There's a lack of tangible perception of time which a serious problem considering the main plot, but I will not go into spoilers. The movie felt longer than Thunderbolts or Superman despite being shorter in duration than both. The direction is incredibly basic. At no point while watching did I say "ooh that's a cool shot I will remember that". It really could've used some more innovative direction to nail that original visual identity, such a shame. Another big problem that I have with it is that the characters don't change or grow at all. They're exactly the same people in the first and final scene of the movie, every single one of them. One exception would be the Silver Surfer but her scenes were definitely cut for some reason, she's seriously lacking in characterization and the movie expects us to buy some of her decisions with zero substance to back it up. All in all I think the script is just weak, it's basic, predictable, barebones and neutered. Things just kind of happen. It's a real shame since I feel like it could've been a really good movie with just a couple of minor adjustments, in fact I feel like it was that at some point during production before it was massacred in post. But this is just a feeling that I have, I've nothing to prove that this is the case. I see many people enjoy it, and I'm glad that is the case. Perhaps in their next entry Marvel can combine the great visuals from this movie with the "balls" that Thunderbolts had to at least try something different. Maybe then I will be excited about a Marvel film again.
This would be a fun movie if I was a 10 year old boy who is super into Marvel. Unfortunatelly I am not and this film justifies my desicion to never watch superhero movies ever again (unless if it's Guardian of the galaxy franchise, love them). The story is corny, scenario is just blah, and the plot is so predictable, so when I left the cinema I felt like I already watched this before? This movie adds nothing new to the already pumped up movie genre and honestly? I feel bad for the (probably) humongous amount of money spent. For all that money atleast 10 indie movies could have been made and a posh and snobbish cinemaphile such as myself would be very satisfied 💅
I would have thought the baby cgi technology would have been better than Twilight.
