Instead of saying what’s already been said about this film a million times, I will tell a story instead. A friend of a friend once saw Isabelle Huppert in Paris and tried to approach her to tell her how much he loved her films. Huppert, wearing her typical oversized sunglasses, handbag hanging off her wrist, and standing at just 5’3” tall, walked right past him without even a nod or smile. I’ve told this story many times to my French friends, and they’ve almost all winced at the part of the story when I say “he approached her” - as if one would never dare to speak to her in public. Isabelle Huppert’s persona has been influenced by the often cold and distant characters she plays in films, but this was also attributed to the respect she’s earned as an actress. What I love about Huppert the most is her fearlessness and versatility. Absolute legend.
i watched this immediately after shame (2011) and the palate switch was like whiplash. fucking wow. absolutely enthralling, could have watched another hour the mother getting shoved was more satisfying than i should probably admit
