Just a hyper realistic, real time, depiction of a shitty afternoon in Iraq. Great performances, fantastic sound design, perfect runtime. It's not a hero's tale of Navy Seals tearing shit up, it's not a get you pumped war film, it's not about civilian casualties, it's a film about what's it's like to be a soldier under enemy fire. In fact, ||we barely see anyone die, they don't even kill anyone at any point from what I can tell||. I've see many bad takes about how this film glorifies or excuses the war in Iraq, about how it should focus on Iraqi soldiers in this conflict, but this is not that type of film. However, I do have one problem with it ||and that's the way that it undermines it's own ending. The movie ends with our heroes leaving in two tanks, two of them are mangled and have lost their legs. They depart after just shelling the surrounding buildings, seemingly harming noone. The Iraqi insurgents walk out into to the street where the entire film takes place, and they just aimlessly look around. This whole conflict was pointless, nothing was lost nothing was gained, a lot of was just wasted. Perfect ending imo, really puts a nice bow on the film without coming of as preachy or too blunt. And then before the credits roll we see a montage of the real life versions of the characters we just saw, ruining that |delicious taste of subtlety and restraint that the entire film oozed. Ah well, I can't really mind it so much because it is the credits, but it really could've done without it. ||
