Bit late to the party. I enjoyed it very much. Loved seeing multiple points of view. All of the characters felt real and relatable. The movie is also funny which i feel helps ground it. Only the ending felt like someone just deleted the last 5 minutes in editing on accident. ||That apparition seen in couple of scenes was unnecessary and it made the movie feel like i was watching The Conjuring or some shit like that.I don't know if it served any purpose other than to tell the audience "But remember, your're watching a scary movie !!"||
Stephen King once spoke about a short story with a fun premise that he ended up never finishing basically because no solution was satisfying enough. I feel like the same thing happened to this movie but they decided to go ahead and make it anyway. The reveal felt like something they just had to choose in order to finish the movie. I think they were aware of how bland the solution of the mystery is in comparison to the mystery itself, and decided to play with structure to make it more engaging. That worked to an extent but the characters just weren’t interesting enough to justify their detailed POVs. There were some fun scenes, especially near the end when it allows itself to be more playful, it’s well made and overall not terrible but you don’t have to watch it, either ||P.S. I think it’s pretty uncreative to go for yet another “old hag seeking rejuvenation” being a villain, and I only felt bad for the gay couple whose fate was for some reason much more brutal than anything else that happens in the movie||
A pretty hooky premise drags on for too long! I enjoyed parts of it, but parts of it were just not that interesting, ||the same story from multiple POVs but the story itself is just ok, the characters themselves also all just ok. Once the mystery was revealed I didn’t really feel any tension anymore and I felt the movie stopped taking itself seriously as a thriller/horror that it began as. Witch lady is never explained, just hinted as being a parasite.|| Fine, well made with some great cinematography, but not a must watch because I’m not sure what it wanted to be
Wow this film rules! A two hour horror movie that gripped me from the first seconds and didn't let go for the entire runtime. The directing is great, Cregger finds a way to make an overdone suburban American setting interesting to look at almost entirely through creative and dynamic camerawork. Everyone puts in a great performance - Brolin, Garner and Ehrenreich are great but my absolute unexpected favorite was Austin Abrams as Jason, a junkie who just so happens to find himself enveloped in this bizarre story. The movie is structured in a way where we see the same time period from different characters' perspectives and Jason's was my favorite, primarily because of his hilarious performance. Yes, while it is a horror movie, it's also absolutely hilarious. While most of the crowd in my screening wasn't laughing as much, Luka and me got a couple of great laughs. The humour wasn't based on jokes but rather realistic reactions of characters to the weird shit that's happening around them. This also helps ground them and make the more relatable. The score is also fantastic, each chapter had a distinct style of score. It doesn't sound too obvious or jarring but it was a cool way to distinguish these chapters and set the tone for each of the characters. The movie goes to great lengths to establish the rules of it's world and sticks to them diligently. it also tries to cover all potential plot holes and answer all questions that the audience might have. And I have to give it points for that despite some of the explanations requiring a teeny tiny amount of suspension of disbelief. So, the "bad". The hook of this movie is so interesting and gripping that it's almost impossible to deliver a satisfying explanation. Without getting into spoilers, the movie up to the point of the reveal is better than immediately after the reveal, but, then the very ending is fantastic again. I think, all considered, the film does as good of a job as possible considering the circumstances, but it still is a very slight disappointment, maybe the marketing was just too good. The movie kind of flirts with the idea of being an allegory for something, but I can quite put my finger on what, maybe we're just reading too much into it. There is one scene which kind of nudges us into digging deeper in to the movie's meaning, but it could've just been for cool visuals. Overall, one of my favorite movies of the year and I'm extremely excited to watch Barbarian and other Cregger's upcoming films. Might even be a 4.5, I'll need to simmer on it a bit more.
