Years ago, the fearsome Pirate King, Gol D. Roger was executed leaving a huge pile of treasure and the famous "One Piece" behind. Whoever claims the "One Piece" will be named the new King of the Pirates. Monkey D. Luffy, a boy who consumed a "Devil Fruit," decides to follow in the footsteps of his idol, the pirate Shanks, and find the One Piece. It helps, of course, that his body has the properties of rubber and that he's surrounded by a bevy of skilled fighters and thieves to help him along the way. Luffy will do anything to get the One Piece and become King of the Pirates!

In most cases, movie is going to be worse than the book. In some rare cases, the movie is going to be better than the book—Godfather comes to mind. In some cases, there will be several adaptations in different mediums, and the quality hierarchy can vary. Witcher for example goes video game>book>tv show, and not, as expected, book>tv show>video game. One Piece is a rare exception. The manga, the anime and the new live action are all brilliant, equal and to be enjoyed in different situations, based on your mood. If I don’t have time, I will read the manga. It’s the quickest way to get through the material. If I have time and I space to focus and relax, it’s going to be the anime. The live action is the easiest to digest, and requires least mental energy. It exists for days I’m wrung out and achy. The heart is the same across the three sister adaptations. The crazy unapologetic world building. The stubbornly progressive politics. The beautiful art. It’s got class and courage, a sense of itself and its aesthetic is so sharp it could cut through steel. It’s easier if you get into it as a kid. If you start as an adult, you’re going to have to do some work first. You’re going to have to peel away several layers of calcified cynicism and heartless, IKEA, self important minimalism we all absorbed through osmosis. You’re going to have to get over yourself, stop getting in your own way, and remove the instagram filter from your art taste. It’s not going to be hard as such, but it’s going to be uncomfortable for a bit. Worth it, even if only for this. Worth it, even if only so you get to experience Den Den Mushi.
