I'm sooo pissed I urged @marco_rocco into watchng this series for quite a while because it seemed fun and because of Hugh Laurie of course, and now I used up my series token on something so forgettable and cringe I think I hated it even more than he did, but just read his review because as I said I am too pissed to write one myself.... cheers guys
This is a "review"of season one, I will not be watching season two and onwards. This series felt like an excuse to shoot on exotic locations in luxury hotels and villas. Hiddleston is not nearly cool or charismatic enough to sell me on this idea that he's able to charm every single person (man or woman) that looks in his general direction. It feels like an uncool person's idea of being cool, he just edgily stares off into distance trying to aura farm but for me it just comes off as cringe and sauceless. He's entire motivation is so stupid and difficult to believe from the very get-go, to be fair it's not his only motivation, as he cryptically later states into the camera at the tail end of the season, but the rest of his motivation is never elaborated on, is it Jed? Him and Susan Debicki has no chemistry and Hugh Laurie is just fine, the only characters I enjoyed watching is Olivia Coleman as Angela Barr and Tom Hollander as Corky, who's preformance I despised early into the season but he quickly grew on me. In general the only even remotely interesting part was the MI6 policking stuff, really wish there was more of that and less of everything else, especially all the scene to do with any female character except Coleman. They're just wirtten in such a cliche and simple way it's kind of infuriating to watch. Laurie's Roper is supposed to be this "worst person in the world" character but he's not really menacing in any of his scenes, nor are his actions that horrible within the context of trading weapons of mass destruction. It could be that's it's just difficult to be terrified of characters who constantly say things like "old chum" or "chap" or "my old boy". As I previously stated, Hollander was the only actor who was able to sell me on that and his role is not that large. All in all not a show that I enjoyed, ESPECIALLY considering the cast.
